Behind the cut is my review of the film that I was able to see early this morning.
First off, you’re going to have to forgive any typos or misuse of punctuation in this because my normal beta reader is offline sleeping (like sane people do).
I went to a very early showing of Dear John and I have to say I was impressed. It carried well over into a screenplay. As most of you know it’s the film adaptation of Nicholas Spark’s novel and follows in the footsteps of The Notebook and A Walk To Remember. Those films were wonderful in their own right, it seems whoever casts for these always manages to cast people with chemistry between them and Dear John was no exception.
Channing and Amanda literally stole every scene they had together. They were flawless in slipping into the skin of their characters and the natural chemistry was a major plus. (Don’t worry, I still want Channing to stay with Jenna and Amanda to stay with Dominic, I haven’t gone that far off the deep end).
The story was amazing, I can’t say there’s nothing I didn’t like about it, though like all movies, it had it’s slow points but it was still worth the time and effort to sit in the very uncomfortable seats and watch. Other goers to the showing seemed to enjoy it as well, seeing as how most of the women in the theater (including some men too) were balling their eyes out pretty much since thirty minutes into the whole movie and continued well out their way into the lobby.
The story is touching, there’s no doubt about it as all Nicholas’s books do. There’s a sense of reality to it as well that hit extremely close to me, seeing as someone I care deeply about is serving and I think that’s what everyone can look forward to. I give this movie eight stars. Why? The actors show us what it’s like from that angle without overdoing it. Is it a chick flick? By all standards? Yes. Is it a perfect date movie? If you don’t mind your partner more then likely crying on your shoulder then yes.
That’s all I can give you without getting into spoilers, but I’d recommend this movie to anyone who needs something new to watch, I’m pretty sure it’ll go down in history like The Notebook, which to this day is still a rather popular movie.
